my 10 core beliefs about birth
My clients ask me, “what are the best ways I can prepare for birth?”
For many, it’s their first time. And for everyone, of course, they want to do it “right” — to have the best outcome possible.
What should I read? What classes should I take? What interventions might I encounter? What could go wrong?
Should I get acupuncture or see a pelvic floor therapist or a chiropractor? Should I drink red raspberry leaf tea? Eat 6 dates a day? Try hypnobirthing?
The questions could go on forever — and they often do, long after baby is born.
As a doula, I 100% believe that learning about labor and birth, making informed choices, nourishing your body and spirit, preparing physically for the marathon of labor, and building the right support team around you are all important steps to take.
But here’s what I’ve come to know deeply:
The most powerful way you can prepare for your birth… is to investigate your belief system.
What you believe about birth matters.
Because what you believe about birth shapes how you will experience birth.
This includes what you believe to be true about the process of birth, what you believe about your body, and what you believe you’re inherently capable of, and so much more.
Our beliefs are shaped by everything — culture, media, our friends and family, medical systems, lived experiences. From a young age, we’re bombarded by stories and shown images of birth that paint it as something terrifying, dangerous, dramatic, and deeply medicalized.
By the time we’re pregnant, most of us have unknowingly internalized a version of birth that centers pain, fear, and powerlessness.
So for many of my clients, it’s a radical moment to even consider that there might be another way.
That’s where our work begins.
As your doula, I want to share my own core beliefs about birth — because if I’m going to be in the room with you, holding space for this moment in your life, it matters what I believe too.
My trust in birth deepens with every birth I witness, and I continue to shed beliefs that no longer feel true.
This is the foundation I return to again and again:
My 10 Core Beliefs About Birth
Birth is a normal, healthy bodily function.
Birth is also a mystery that deserves reverence.
Birth belongs to birthers.
“Healthy mom, healthy baby” is the bare minimum.
HOW we birth matters.
Birth can be joyful, peaceful, and un-rushed.
Babies know how to be born.
You have everything you need.
Trust your inner knowing.
My job is simply to help you find what you’re seeking in your birth.
Whether you’re preparing for your first baby or your fifth, I invite you to reflect on what you believe about birth. Because what you believe sets the tone for how you’ll move through it — and how you’ll remember it for the rest of your life.
If these words resonate, I’d be honored to walk alongside you. Let’s chat!
In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing a deeper reflection on each of these beliefs — exploring what they mean in practice, how they’ve been shaped by my experiences as a doula and as a mama, and why they matter for anyone preparing to give birth.
